Director, Global Challenges Division, Global Challenges and Partnerships Sector, WIPO, Geneva

Marion “Amy” Dietterich is the Director of the Global Challenges Division at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

In this role, she covers Intellectual Property (IP)-related global policy issues in the areas of Global Health, Climate Change, and Food Security.

Amy has twenty years of experience in the fields of public health, water & sanitation, and governance, spanning community-based organizations, international NGOs, global health partnerships, and United Nations institutions. Prior to joining WIPO in 2018, she worked with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to ensure stronger community engagement in health systems governance and service delivery, and with the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and IMF to support parliamentary oversight of development cooperation and financing.

Ms. Dietterich earned her academic qualifications in Epidemiology, Biology, and French from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical

Medicine (LSHTM) and Bucknell University in 2005 and 2000 respectively.

Salim S. Abdool Karim, FRS, is\r\na South African clinical infectious diseases epidemiologist widely recognized\r\nfor scientific and leadership contributions in AIDS and Covid-19.

Professor Abdool Karim is Director of the\r\nCentre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA), Durban,\r\nand CAPRISA Professor of Global Health at Columbia University, New York. He is\r\nan Adjunct Professor of Immunology and Infectious Diseases at Harvard\r\nUniversity, Boston, Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Cornell University, New\r\nYork, and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal,\r\nDurban. He previously served as President of the South African Medical Research\r\nCouncil.

He is a member of the Science Council of the\r\nWorld Health Organisation (WHO). He is a Vice-President of the International\r\nScience Council and Director of a Global Virus Network Centre of Excellence. He is a Commissioner of the African Union\r\nCommission on Covid-19.

Professor Abdool Karim was ranked among the\r\nworld’s most highly cited scientists by Web\r\nof Science. He serves on the Boards of several prestigious\r\njournals, including the New\r\nEngland Journal of Medicine, Lancet Global Health and Lancet HIV. He is a\r\nmember of the US National Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Viviana MUÑOZ TELLEZ is the Programme Coordinator of the\r\nHealth, Intellectual Property and Biodiversity (HIPB) Programme of the South\r\nCentre, the intergovernmental think tank of 55 developing countries. As of\r\n2006, Dr. Munoz leads the team providing policy-oriented research, expert\r\nadvice and technical assistance activities to developing countries and\r\ninstitutions on health and intellectual property issues. She holds a Doctorate\r\ndegree on management of technology from the École Polytechnique of Lausanne\r\n(EPFL), Switzerland, - having focused on models of R&D collaboration to\r\ndeliver affordable biomedical innovations addressing the disease burden in\r\ndeveloping countries, and a Master's degree in Development Management from the\r\nLondon School of Economics (LSE).

Acting Director, Africa CDC

Dr Ahmed Ogwell OUMA is currently the Acting Director of Africa CDC. He is also the founding Deputy Director, and, in these roles, he has led the strategic work and oversight of Africa CDC. He works closely with African Union Member States and partners to deliver on the mandate of Africa CDC of preventing and controlling diseases in Africa. Ahmed has led the operations of Africa CDC during the COVID-19 pandemic, coordinating the planning, acquisition, and delivery of life-saving health products to African countries including test kits, personal protective materials, therapeutics, and vaccines. Formerly, he worked with the WHO at both the HQs and Regional Office for Africa, in combating NCDs & tobacco control. Prior to that, Dr. Ahmed worked at country level in the Ministry of Health, Kenya, as Director for NCDs and then Head of the Office for International Health Relations. He has been at the forefront of advocacy and action to reform the health system in Africa including the need to establish an efficient & effective response mechanism for disease threats and health emergencies. He has over 25 years’ experience in public health and is an alumnus of the University of Nairobi in Kenya and the University of Bergen in Norway.

Executive Director, Policy, Gilead Sciences

James Class leads Gilead’s Global\r\nHealth Systems, Value and Intellectual Property Policy group from the\r\nWashington, DC office. In this current role, he manages a team of global Policy\r\nspecialists who work cross-functionally throughout Gilead and engage externally\r\nwith policymakers and stakeholders, including global and multilateral\r\norganizations.

James worked for almost a decade at\r\nPhRMA with responsibility for diverse public policy issues at the state,\r\nfederal and international levels. He then spent seven years at Merck, where he\r\nheld roles in Corporate Strategy, Regional and Country Commercial Operations\r\nand Global Public Policy in the US, Russia and Switzerland. At the onset of\r\nCOVID-19, he led Gilead’s engagement with the World Health Organization on the\r\nSOLIDARITY trial. He currently co-chairs Gilead’s Innovation and Policy team\r\nfor Veklury (Remdesivir).

James holds a PhD with distinction in\r\nRussian intellectual history from Georgetown University, has published original\r\nresearch in peer-reviewed publications, and has lived and traveled extensively\r\nthroughout the world, promoting policies on science-based biologics regulation,\r\npricing, and intellectual property among others. He also established the Board\r\nof the Partnership for Safe Medicines and launched the first direct-to-patient\r\ncounterfeit drug alert system. He has participated in numerous stakeholder\r\ninitiatives, including with Interpol, WHO, and the USPTO Training Academy.

Secretary General, The International Generic\r\nand Biosimilar Medicines Association (IGBA)

Suzette\r\nKox is the first Secretary General of the International Generic and Biosimilar\r\nMedicines Association. She was nominated in January 2019, after 17 years in\r\nvarious functions at Medicines for Europe. Adopting a patient centric approach,\r\nIGBA works to improve patients’ access to quality-assured, safe and\r\ncost-effective medicines by promoting competition and enabling innovation in\r\nthe pharmaceutical sector and sustainable economic contributions for all\r\nstakeholders. Before joining the generic medicines industry in 1992, Suzette\r\nfollowed a hospital and retail pharmacy career. Along with a degree in pharmacy\r\n(Paris), she holds a postgraduate diploma in anatomy-pathology (Cochin Port Royal,\r\nParis).

MSF/Working Group on Intellectual Property,\r\nBrazil

Felipe de Carvalho is a\r\njournalist, with a master's degree in International Political Economy at the\r\nFederal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Felipe works at MSF since 2009,\r\nwith a focus on access to medicines, diagnostics and vaccines; intellectual\r\nproperty law; Research and Development (R&D) principles and policies;\r\nglobal health and multilateral negotiations. Felipe has been engaged in MSF\r\nAccess Campaign efforts to ensure availability and accessibility of health\r\ntools to address the Covid-19 pandemic and has acted as a civil society\r\nrepresentative at the Access to COVID-19 Tools\r\n(ACT) Accelerator, in the treatment pillar. Felipe is also a member of the\r\nWorking Group on Intellectual Property of the Brazilian Network for Integration\r\nof Peoples (GTPI/REBRIP), a civil society coalition of 17 organizations that\r\nwork since 2003 to promote equitable access to treatment in Brazil.
