Deputy Director General, Regional and National Development Sector, WIPO.

Mr. Hasan Kleib is Deputy Director General for the Regional and National Development Sector of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) since January 2021. Prior to the role, he was the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations, the World Trade Organization (WTO) and other International Organizations in Geneva from 2017 to 2020. During his tenure, Mr. Hasan Kleib served as the Chairman of the Committee on Development and Intellectual Property in 2018-2019 and 2019-2020.

From 2012-2017, he was the Deputy Foreign Minister for Multilateral Affairs of Indonesia after finishing his tenure as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the United Nations in New York. Since 1987, he has served a number of roles in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Director for International Security and Disarmament, and in Indonesian Missions abroad including as Head of the Political Division at the Indonesian Embassy in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Kleib received a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Padjadjaran University from Indonesia and Master’s Degree in Foreign Affairs and Trade from Monash University in Australia.

Ambassador and Permanent Representative of \r\nMexico to the United Nations Office and other \r\ninternational organizations

Ambassador Méndez entered the Diplomatic Service of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1991. She graduated as a BSc in Political Sciences and Public Administration and a MSc in Latin American Studies from the Mexican National Autonomous University (UNAM). She obtained her second MSc in Law and Economics from the Milan State University in Italy. She has diplomas in international politics, public diplomacy and Arab studies.

Throughout her career Ambassador Méndez has represented Mexico in over forty meetings in multilateral and regional forums, where she is known for her negotiation and consensus building skills. In the Embassies and Consulates where she was posted, she significantly promoted economic and cultural cooperation.

She was a speaker in various conferences on Mexican foreign policy and has published numerous articles on the Mexican and European Union partnership as well as on sustainable development. She was the editor of a book titled “The Embassy of Mexico in Costa Rica: testimony of a solid and constructive partnership”. Lastly, Ambassador Méndez is the author of “The links between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean: A historical perspective of the regional integration”. Her mother tongue is Spanish, and she speaks English, French and Italian.

Komal leads the Intellectual Property and Trade Policy portfolio of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA).

She works with UN member states and international and regional organizations to promote global health solutions by advocating international best practices for IP protection, removing market access barriers, and creating a sustainable ecosystem to incentivize innovation.

Her experience as a corporate attorney and trusted government advisor enables Komal to resolve complex domestic and international policy and business challenges in numerous sectors.

Prior to joining IFPMA, Komal led the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s attaché program in South Asia. She was the principal strategic advisor to the US Government (USG) on all aspects of Intellectual Property for India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Afghanistan, and Maldives.

In addition, Komal led negotiations with South Asian Governments relating to IP policy initiatives of the USG. Komal has also developed and executed several technical assistance and capacity building programs aimed at creating a sustainable innovation ecosystem that promotes, protects, and enforces IP.

She holds a Master of Law (LLM) from the George Washington Law School and an Bsc LLB (Hons) in IP from West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences.

Ms. Ellen ‘t Hoen (1960) is the director of Medicines Law & Policy (ML&P), a group of legal and policy experts offering advice to international organizations, NGOs and governments. ML&P publishes studies and commentaries in the field of medicines policy and intellectual property. ML&P maintains a public database of the use of TRIPS flexibilities for public health purposes. She is the founder and former executive director of the Medicines Patent Pool. She is also a Global Health Law Fellow at the law faculty of the University of Groningen.

She has published widely and is the author of several books. In 2017 she received the Prix Prescrire for her book “Private Patents and Public Health: Changing intellectual property rules for public health.” In 2020, she was appointed Officer of the Order of Oranje-Nassau, a Dutch royal award given in recognition of her work on access to medicines. Between 2005 and 2021 she was listed 5 times as one of the 50 most influential people in intellectual property by the journal Managing Intellectual Property.

She has a master’s degree in law from the University of Amsterdam and a PhD from the University of Groningen.

He received the 2023 Dr. Eduardo Charreau Award for Regional Scientific-Technological Cooperation from the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI). He is a researcher at the Center for Research on Integrated Disaster Risk Management (CIGIDEN) and the Multidisciplinary Initiative for Collaborative Research on Bacterial Resistance (MICROB-R). Previously, he was a Luksic Scholar at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, Harvard University (2022-2023), a CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar (2021-2023), and a Steven M. Teutsch Prevention Effectiveness Fellow at the US CDC (2015-2017).

Mr. Karim Wanga is a pharmacist by training and graduated with Master of Pharmacy degree in Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacovigilance from University of Nairobi and recently completed a fellowship program in Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

He is a Pharmaceutical Expert at the Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) which is one of the Africa Union (AU) Regional Economic Community in the horn of Africa. He is currently supporting the medicines regulation harmonization (MRH) program and the Health Emergency Preparedness, Response and Resilience (HEPRR) program under the sub-component on access to quality health products including local vaccines and pharmaceuticals manufacturing. He has worked previously at the Kenya Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) for over ten years across several regulatory functions which include regulatory inspections, pharmacovigilance & post-marketing surveillance and Clinical trials. He has a special interest in drug utilization studies and medicines regulatory sciences.

H.E. Mrs. Julia Imene-Chanduru was appointed Permanent Representative of Namibia to the United Nations Office at Geneva in February 2021.

Prior to her appointment to Geneva, Ms. Imene-Chanduru had been serving as Counsellor and Deputy Permanent Representative of Namibia to the United Nations in New York from December 2018 to November 2020. She was the Personal Assistant to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation from May to December 2018, and was the Deputy Director of the Ministry of International Relations and cooperation from January 2015 to April 2018.

A career diplomat, Ms. Imene-Chanduru joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Namibia in 2004. She served as First Secretary at the Embassy of Namibia in Washington, D.C. from January 2007 to December 2011. She has held various posts at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including as Administrative Assistant to the Permanent Secretary, Chief Foreign Relations Officer, and Foreign Relations Officer.

Ms. Imene-Chanduru has a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Namibia (2005) and a master’s degree in international service from the American University in Washington D.C., United States (2011). She was born on 10 September 1979 and is married.

Since 2008, she has been a member of the Indonesian National Safety in Oil and Gas, where she has been involved in investigating major accidents and safety audits within oil and gas Industries. She is also a Vice Chairperson for Indonesia OHS National Council, Vice Chairperson of Indonesia Disaster Experts Association.

She is also the author of more than 30 books published national and internationally.

Her research focuses on digital health, technology and safety management in hazardous workplaces, leadership and employability skills. She supervises and examines postgraduate and undergraduate dissertations and project work. She has participated and presented research findings in a number of International Webinars and conferences on development of telemedicine in Sub-Saharan Africa: Progress and Associated Challenges, digital health, innovations and acceptance in Africa.

As a researcher, she has published in leading Journals, and book chapters and contributed to advancing occupational safety and health discipline. As Vice President of UTAG-UCC, she advocates and engages with stakeholders to improve the working conditions of University Teachers in Ghana.

She has received a number of awards and fellowships including a Research Support Grant and the International Labour Organisation fellowship.

In addition to his corporate role, Mr. Acuña also serves as Vice President of the Costa Rica Medical Devices Cluster, an organization dedicated to advancing the sector through collaboration and innovation.

Ms. Marion “Amy” Dietterich is the Director of the Global Challenges Division (GCD) at WIPO. The Division addresses innovation and IP at the nexus of interconnected global policy issues including trade and global health, engaging in diverse global policy discussions relating to IP and implementing on-the-ground projects that demonstrate the positive power of IP in fostering global health innovation.

Amy has twenty years of experience in the fields of public health, water & sanitation, and governance, spanning community-based organizations, international NGOs, global health partnerships, and United Nations institutions. Prior to joining WIPO in 2018, she worked with Gavi and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to ensure stronger community engagement in immunization programs and health systems governance mechanisms.

Ms. Dietterich earned her academic qualifications in Public Health, Biology, and French from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and Bucknell University in 2005 and 2000 respectively
